A new hotel in Indonesia is making waves for its unique design. PituRooms, which means “seven rooms” in Javanese, is just 2.8 meters (9 feet) wide, making it the world’s skinniest hotel.
The hotel is the brainchild of Ary Indra, an architect who grew up in Salatiga, Central Java. Indra returned to his hometown after working in Jakarta and Singapore, and he wanted to find a way to use his skills to revitalise the city.
He found an unwanted piece of land that no one was willing to develop due to its odd size. But Indra saw an opportunity, and he set out to build a hotel that would be both unique and functional.
PituRooms is a five-story hotel with seven rooms, each big enough for a double bed and a small bathroom with a shower and toilet. Each room has a different feel thanks to local artwork and interiors.
The hotel has been open since December 2022 and has been a hit with Indonesian tourists. However, Indra says that he would like to see more foreigners come to Salatiga and experience the city’s rich culture and history.
In addition to the hotel rooms, PituRooms also has a rooftop restaurant that locals can enjoy, and the hotel plans to host events and art exhibitions.
Indra hopes that PituRooms will be the first of many projects to help outsiders see that Salatiga is about much more than just a nice place to retire. He wants to show the world that Salatiga is a vibrant and dynamic city with a lot to offer.
